Restoring the Headframe
The Kennedy Gold Mine is Jackson’s (and AmadorCounty’s!) premiere
historic attraction, with 1800 weekend guests and 800+ school children
visiting Jackson every year to tour the mine and experience Gold Country
history. Stabilizing and restoring the iconic Headframe, the centerpiece
of the mine property, is top priority for the Kennedy Mine Foundation.
The 135-foot East Shaft Headframe is the only one of its size still in
existence in the Mother Lode!
Phase I of this effort, replacing the decking at the base of the headframe, has been accomplished through countless hours of volunteer labor and a generous grant from the Native Sons of the Golden West and other donations. Now visitors can safely walk under the headframe and also look down into the lighted shaft through a series of grates in the deck floor.
Phase II will continue this work to the second level deck of the headframe, replacing the deteriorating deck, tipple, and railings. A goal of $50,000 has been set for these repairs. For more information, call the Kennedy Mine, 209-233-9542, weekends.

Teachers, Educators: We have a
special Group Guided tour designed for your students!
On the Kennedy Gold Mine surface tour, visitors see the mine office building where gold flakes were melted into large bricks to ship by Wells Fargo stage to San Francisco. This is also where ore samples were processed to see if a particular underground area was worthy of further investigation. See the stamp and gold recovery mill, tailing wheels, a steam boiler and the huge steel head frame whose pulleys guided the miners into the bowels of the earth. You will also see the building [now a museum] where the men changed into their mining garb before dropping nearly a mile underground to work. View a historic video of the men working circa 1914, and much more. Visit the Kennedy Gold Mine and gain new insight into the complications and hardships of the miner's way of life.
